the Algerian factions it is too easy to mass terrorists and take over
  French cities.
~ Research is now a vital part of the game for the Frenchmen.
Discovery of custom advances will allow wonders and units
needed to win game. -- See game notes below.

INSTALLATION:
This scenario requires Civilization II Fantastic Worlds (FW) or better (MGE).
If you have FW/MGE then you probably already know that these files should be
installed in a subdirectory of the SCENARIO directory. This package contains
the files for the Sound subdirectory for use in the scenario. If you use
WINZIP, use the "use folder names" option when you EXTRACT and you'll be
done. It will create a directory named Algeria. Otherwise, you'll have to
create an Algeria directory (or whatever you want) and SOUND directory
in the Algeria directory and move the .wav files and the file copysnd.bat
there.

SOUND DIRECTORY SETUP:
Assuming that you have created the SOUND directory for the scenarion and
that the .wav files and COPYSND.BAT are there, you need to execute
COPYSND.BAT or the Shortcut to COPYSND.BAT from the SOUND directory
to complete the SOUND directory setup. This batch file was included
instead of the actual sounds to save space in the distribution file.

Most of the scenario sounds are standard sounds from the game being used
in a non-standard way. They will be copied with the new name so that the
sounds are appropriate for the units.

GAME NOTES:
To help you with the new units, wonders and technologies, a pedia.txt
file has been included so that the help in the game will be correct.

If you play the French, it is vital that you research these advances:
Reserve Callup, Public Safety, Infiltration, Hearts and Minds, Challe Plan.
These will allow you build wonders and units that will make it easier to win.

This scenario largely deals with the military tactics employed by both sides.
In the beginning the 6 FLN Wilayas are allied, however these alliances are
not permanent. If you play one of FLN factions, you will not only have to
fight the French but you may have to fight fellow Muslims as well. As the
French you cannot negotiate with the hard line Muslims.

HISTORICAL NOTES:
The Algerian War of Independence was a long guerilla war that the French
won militarily, but lost politically. Algerian Nationalists had sought
complete independence since the end of World War II, but in November of 1954,
they launched a series of attacks to seize arms from the French and begin
the struggle for independence. They were successful enough to gain
international recognition of their cause and some military assistance from
Morrocco, Tunisia, and Egypt.

At first the National Liberation Front (FLN) controlled large areas of the
countryside. As the French began to regain control militarily, the FLN
countered with a campaign of urban terrorism. The French answer to urban
terror was checkpoints and relocation camps which only served to polarize
the situation. To round up guerillas in the countryside, the French employed
airborne tactics. Air patrols would find the guerillas and paratroopers would
be send in to destroy the guerillas.

Despite French military success, the war dragged on and on. In 1958, the
French government collapsed and Charles De Gaulle came out of retirement to
head the government. De Gaulle knew that in the long run Algeria could not
remain part of France. He hoped that military success would strengthen his
hand in the political negotiations that would determine the status of
Algeria. His goal was to grant Algerian independence which retained French
influence. Although the French achieved military success, in the end any
chance of compromise with the FLN was undermined by the Europeans (Colons)
living in Algeria. They engaged in terrorist acts against French interests
both in France and Algeria as well as terrorist acts against Muslims in
Algeria.

Finally in July 1962, Algeria was granted independence. The French public
had become war weary and world opinion had turned against the heavy handed
tactics of the French. In the end, the FLN outlasted the French.

TROUBLESHOOTING SOUND SETUP:
If you got the message "The CIV2\SOUND directory could not be found.",
it is probably because the CIV2 directory is not 3 or 4 levels below the
Algeria\SOUND directory. Make sure Algeria\SOUND is the current directory
when running copysnd.bat and that the Algeria directory is a subdirectory
of the CIV2\SCENARIO directory. If this was not the case, you may want
give it another shot.
If you had other copy errors, there may be missing files in the
CIV2\SOUND directory. Restore them and try copysnd.bat again if that was
the problem.
